Do I need to send a gift to a Bat Mitzvahs if I cannot attend the party?

I have a student who's older sister is becoming a Bat Mitzvah. My husband and I were invited but cannot attend due to another committment. Do I need to send a gift? If so, I understand that money is typical so how much is appropriate?
